ที่นี่ : HERE : 여기

@ Silpakorn University A.I.R, Thailand

Here we are;

Here we meet;

Here we make;

Here we live.

Project  [ที่นี่ : HERE : 여기]  took place for two months
at Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, Thailand.

A form of ‘pen pal’ in the era of wireless, real-time, yet intangible communication was
to overcome the barrier of language and society between a Korean art maker and Thai art makers
through visual, tangible language.

Throughout the course of communication,
you and I become ‘we’, and communication forms an appreciation of our transnational community.

HERE letter exchange took place from October 13th to November 15th.
The mailbox was put in front of Tick Cafe as the contact point between myself and the pen pals.

It was truly unfortunate that King Bhumibol passed away on the day it began.
Everyone seemed really shocked and sad. I felt lost, not sure if it was even okay for me to go on with the project.
Even after getting consent from the people around, I felt uneasy.
Before continuing any further, I wanted to empathise with everyone
and covered the originally blue mailbox with black pieces of paper to show my respect.

Participants were asked to keep the letters in the size of A4.
As long as it was in, or made of that size, the pen pals could experiment as much as one can.
While majority of communication occurred in English, the overall flow of the conversation was in visual languages.

While continuing on the translingual communication through letters,
bonds with individual pen pals was also built up every day through face to face interaction on the side.

Despite the short period of time,
the accumulation of conversations and affinity created a sense of community-scape,
forming an appreciation of our transnational community, here.
